We haven’t touched on this one in a while.
Who is trending up? Who is trending down? What the hell is the appeal of iheartsl.com?
As always, it’s a magical combination of a three source stew of crap figures and a total rejection of Technocrati. If you wish to flaunt that bullshit authority number, please do it elsewhere. Before going WordPress this site was not listed by them. When we moved it was the bottom of bottom and over just a few months has jumped 1.5 million spots? No, I don’t think so. The system is not reliable. We are same med-upper low traffic site we have always been. We just jumped in their pool which is a dumb way to rank things.
Not to single anyone out, but Dale Innis is a good example. Ranks way above this site on Technocrati but using the admittedly wonky Alexa rates around 7 million to our 2 million. The bigger measuring sticks omit us both (way too small time) so all we can get from this data is people link to his content and not ours. Does that mean more hits? I doubt it, I suspect we are about equal when measured on the relevant items. It does mean he is way nicer than me (he really is btw).
And now to the misleading chart.
As always I have to question if including Massively is good for anyone since they are just not in the same league, but we have more important issues here. New World Notes appears to be continuing their trend. As I said last time it’s not going to result in loosing top place among the Second Life blogs because they still hold a near 2:1 over the next guy, but for 2009 they are the only big site showing an overall loss. As for the month everyone is down but we should write that off to summer.
I do not know what is causing the trend at NWN since if anything they have continued to produce a high quality site and play by rules Jesus would find honorable (were he less like Santa Claus – email me Jesus kids – I love it). It’s even more amazing given iheartsl which as near as I can figure is one big ad disguised as a blog is trending up.
What trend? Zoom it out and mislead again, Spindarella.
Going back some time to show the trend and dropped Massively so my darling Prok could be tossed in the mix (yellow). The big item worth noting is no one is really changing the game here except iheartsl who has grown base, lost it, and gained it back more than once. Other than a few spikes Alphavillle is above even. What? Yes, we said the overall yearly trend is up minus NWN but take into account the spikes (both up and down) to see it’s a bit like winning back what you lost in slots.
Does the chart work for everyone? Hell no. It’s even contradicted by other charts. Alexa says both NWN & Alpaha are trending down (slightly in the later) and Disco ranks above Prok. Since I attacked Technocrati I might as well do the same for Alexa. Their data is for the most part based on users they track via tool bars, so all Alexa tells you is how many suckers visit your site honestly.
I can understand your need to test the system so let’s pick an easy one. I give you the Vint effect.
Look at blue. Blue rocks! Or blue rocked. Blue (which we can all guess is Vint by now) left the country and all years of free tutorials, amazing help, and devotion to the community has been repaid in kind as she posts less and is abandoned by us. Overtaken by the Disco (green). Orange is iheartsl which is again shown only as a WTF wake up call for me and a repeated plea that someone please explain their appeal to me.
Let’s wrap up. Is this fact? No. It’s our spin on figures which I’ve admitted vary from source to source. Will you like them? No. Do I care. No.
